Rather than focusing on a single breed, this 1890 poster for the New England Kennel Club's bench show gathers a variety of dogs on one sheet, a common way to advertise shows of the period. The term "bench show" referred to exhibiting dogs on raised benches where judges could examine them, a format that spread through American dog fancy in the later nineteenth century as clubs worked to define and compare breeds. Posters like this one drew spectators to the event and suggested the range of animals on display. Looking closely, viewers can see the physical traits that owners and judges of the day prized.
