Folsom's railroad and suspension bridges make this view distinct from the usual depot scenes on the board. The Sacramento Valley Railroad reached Folsom in 1856, carrying passengers from Sacramento along a route that was among the first in the West, and the American River crossings were central to that line. The Library holds only one half of this stereoscopic pair, catalogued as number 1052 in a series titled *Gems of California Scenery*, and the 1866 date and other caption details come from old, unverified card data. Albumen prints like this one were widely sold as parlor stereoviews in the 1860s.
