Few gallery views put a railroad and a suspension bridge in the same frame, and this one shows both at Folsom, the Sacramento County town that grew up around gold-rush mining and became an early rail terminus in California. The Sacramento Valley Railroad reached Folsom in the 1850s, linking the foothills to the river port at Sacramento, so the tracks here mark a transport link that changed how ore, timber and supplies moved through the region. This print is a half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, published around 1866 according to its record, and the library holds only this side. Its albumen surface and stereo format are typical of the period's commercial views.
