The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, set against the Tidal Basin with its cherry trees in bloom, is the focus here, and the photograph captures the building at the height of the spring blossom season. The memorial was dedicated in 1943 and sits on the south bank of the Tidal Basin, a site chosen partly for its view across the water toward the White House. The cherry trees, a gift from Japan in 1912, turned the basin into one of Washington's best-known spring landmarks, and by the late 1940s the pairing of the white domed rotunda with the pale pink blossoms had become a familiar image of the capital.
