Few things in this album capture a horse mid-lesson quite like this one, which shows a trained animal raised up on its hind legs, a movement long prized in classical horsemanship. The print is captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French and was made by Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople studio that photographed for the Ottoman court. It belongs to a album of horses at the Imperial Stud Farm outside Istanbul, assembled in the years when Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who reigned from 1876 to 1909, was building up his collection of photographs. Its formal, carefully posed quality reflects how the palace used images to show off its horses and its modern standing.
