A reddish Turkoman horse, photographed at the Imperial Stud Farm near Istanbul, is one of several horse portraits in an album made for Sultan Abdul-Hamid II between 1880 and 1893. The studio of Abdullah Frères, the Constantinople firm that served the Ottoman court, produced the print as an albumen silver image, and its Ottoman Turkish and French captions reflect the album's bilingual audience. Turkoman horses, bred from Central Asian lines, were highly valued in Ottoman breeding programs, so the picture documents both a prized animal and the state's interest in its stock.
