Its Italian title, *Caduta di Niagara* ("Fall of Niagara"), suggests this etching was made for a European audience, and it is signed only with the initials G.M.T. and *fc.*, for *fecit*, meaning "made it." Dated 1777, it appeared during the American Revolution, when the Niagara frontier lay between British posts and the new United States. Few Europeans had seen the falls firsthand, so prints like this one carried reports of the cataract to viewers far from North America.
