Few things show how far Niagara's fame had spread like this colored lithographic title page, which pairs a piano piece with a view of the falls. The "Souvenir de Niagara" was a *caprice caractéristique* for pianoforte, Op. 19, by August Gockel, issued by the Hamburg firm Schuberth & Co. and signed by the engraver Tucksch. Parlor music of the mid-to-late nineteenth century often carried illustrated covers like this one, and Niagara, already a major tourist destination in the United States and Canada, was a popular subject. The record gives only a range of dates for publication, so the exact year is uncertain, but the cover shows how composers and publishers in Europe borrowed American scenery to sell music.
