This is a color lithograph title page for a piano piece, not a view made for a travel album. Its title, "Souvenir de Niagara," names the falls as the subject of a *caprice caractéristique* by August Gockel, Op. 19, engraved by Tucksch and issued in Hamburg by the German publisher Schuberth & Co. Music publishers of the period often decorated sheet-music covers with popular scenic and travel subjects, which helped sell pieces to amateur pianists who might never see the falls themselves. Niagara drew many nineteenth-century visitors and artists, and this cover shows how its image reached households in Germany as well as North America.
