Unlike most views on this board, this print is named for a battle rather than the falls, and its title points to the fighting that swept the Niagara frontier during the War of 1812. British, Canadian, and American forces contested the river corridor between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie from 1812 to 1814, and the region's towns and forts changed hands more than once. The caption card gives no date or artist, but the aquatint technique, which used powdered resin to create tonal areas, was widely used for military and topographical prints in the early 1800s. Viewers can read it as a record of the war as the public wanted to see it, shaped by the conventions of the period.
