This glass negative records a close view of the trucks, the wheel-and-axle frames that carried Washington's rapid transit cars, at a time when the city's streetcar and interurban network was expanding. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington and the surrounding region in the early twentieth century, made the image, and its title and date come from the company's own notes and from neighboring negatives, so both are approximate. The plate was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers should expect streaks and blemishes in the image, which come from deterioration of the original emulsion coating on the glass.
