Few buildings at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia were paid for so directly by women. Funded largely through subscriptions raised by a women's executive committee, the Women's Pavilion displayed inventions, art, and educational work by women, presenting a public case for what they had produced beyond the home. Standing in Fairmount Park among the fair's larger halls, it drew steady attention and became a landmark of the early women's movement in the United States.
