Rather than a view of the great exhibition halls, this wood engraving shows the Graphic Section of the American Centennial Exhibition, the part of the Philadelphia fair devoted to printing, publishing, and the reproduction of images. It appeared in *The London Graphic*, an illustrated weekly founded in London in 1869, in its 12 August 1876 issue, while the exhibition was still open. The fair ran from May to November 1876 to mark the centennial of the Declaration of Independence, and the British press followed it closely, so engravings like this one let readers in London see displays they could not visit themselves.
