This stereograph shows a display of American glassware at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, the world's fair that opened in Fairmount Park in 1876 to mark the nation's hundredth birthday. Stereo cards like this one were sold as souvenirs and viewed through a stereoscope, which made the rows of cases and objects appear to stand out in three dimensions. The exhibition gave American manufacturers a chance to show pressed and cut glass beside European work, and images such as this preserve how those products were arranged for visitors. The card's caption data is unverified, so the exact exhibitor and display details are best checked against the original card.
