A rowing scene from 1994, *River Run* is a lithograph by May Stevens, an American painter and printmaker known for figurative work with strong social themes. This sheet is an artist's proof, the first of five, signed in pencil and marked with two blind stamps, one from Tamarind, the Los Angeles lithography workshop founded in 1960 to help artists master the stone and press. Proofs like this one show the working stages of an edition, so they reveal how an image was tested and refined before the final run. The Library of Congress acquired it in 1998.
