Rowing eights were among the most prominent spectacles in American college athletics, and this color poster from about 1908 celebrates that tradition. It was copyrighted by Charles W. Beck Jr. and carries the artist's pictograph signature. Crews from schools such as Harvard and Yale had raced on the Thames River in New London, Connecticut, since 1852, and by the early 1900s intercollegiate regattas drew large crowds and newspaper coverage. Posters like this one helped spread that excitement beyond the campus and the riverbank.
