Rendered as a color woodcut, this sheet shows surf riders at Honolulu, and its artist signed it with the monogram CWB and again in red pencil at lower left. Surfing was a long-standing part of Hawaiian life before outsiders paid much attention to it. By the 1910s and early 1920s, Duke Kahanamoku's swimming achievements and his trips to the mainland and abroad were bringing the sport wider notice. The record dates the work to about 1920 or 1921, when Hawaii was becoming a popular subject for American printmakers and a destination in the public imagination.
