The block is titled and dated 1918, which places this color woodcut among the earlier prints to treat surfing as its own subject rather than a backdrop. Surfing had been part of Hawaiian life for centuries, and by the 1910s Waikiki was drawing visitors who watched riders on long wooden boards. The flat shapes of waves and sky suit the woodcut medium well, and the monogram CWB identifies the maker, though the record does not give a fuller name.
