Taken at La Boca, the Pacific terminus of the Panama Canal, this group portrait records the official party that accompanied President Theodore Roosevelt during his November 1906 inspection of the canal works. Roosevelt's trip made him the first sitting American president to leave the country while in office, and his personal interest in the project was considerable. The photograph was made by A. Bienkowski in Ancon, the town near Panama City where the American canal administration was based. It survives as a halftone print, a mechanical reproduction method that let photographs like this one reach newspapers and magazines of the period.
