The detail that sets this picture apart is its setting: the headquarters of Major General George G. Meade, the Union commander, during the fighting at Gettysburg in early July 1863. Meade took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the battle opened, and he established his headquarters near the Leister House, a few hundred yards behind the Union lines on Cemetery Ridge. From that position he directed the defense on July 1 through 3, when Confederate assaults on the ridge failed and the battle turned. Images of the Union command post like this one help viewers picture where the army's decisions were made during that summer's pivotal engagement.
