Here the Union commander, George G. Meade, sits among his senior officers in a drawn scene of the council he called on the eve of the fighting at Gettysburg. The officers weighed whether to stand and fight at the town or withdraw to a defensive line farther south, and Meade's decision to hold the ground near Gettysburg shaped the battle that followed. The drawing is by James E. Kelly, an illustrator known for Civil War subjects, and this halftone reproduction dates from about 1905, long after the events it shows.
