Its title places George G. Meade at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the afternoon of Pickett's Charge, which sets this portrait apart from studio likenesses of generals. Meade had taken command of the Army of the Potomac only days earlier, on June 28, and his defense of Cemetery Ridge that afternoon helped decide the battle. Currier & Ives issued the print in New York the same year, when the northern public eagerly bought images of its commanders and victories. Today it works both as a likeness of Meade and as a record of how the war was presented to civilians while it was still being fought.
