Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac was not a fortress or a monument but a working camp, and the picture shows it as the nerve center for George G. Meade's forces during the Gettysburg campaign in early July 1863. Meade took command of the army only days before the fighting began, and from his headquarters he and his staff tracked troop movements across the ridges and fields around the town. The scene captures how a Civil War command post looked in practice: tents, wagons, horses, and men awaiting orders rather than the drama of the battle lines themselves. It is worth noticing how modest these arrangements were for an army that would decide one of the war's turning points.
