The Map of the Battle Field of Gettysburg, issued in 1876, lays out the ground as it looked to the soldiers who fought over it, with the town, ridges and roads marked in the order that shaped the first day's fighting on July 1, 1863. Printed about thirteen years after the battle, it reflects the postwar effort to fix the positions of regiments and batteries while veterans and officers were still alive to confirm them. Readers today use maps like this to follow how Union cavalry and then infantry met Confederate forces west and north of town, and why the high ground south of the town became so important in the days that followed.
