The amphitheatre at the Alabama State Fair is the subject of this wood engraving, which Harper's Weekly printed in its second volume in 1858. Harper's, a New York illustrated weekly founded in 1857, relied on engravings like this to show readers scenes they could not visit themselves. Antebellum state fairs brought farmers, stock breeders and townspeople together to show livestock, crops and machinery, and a large open structure like this would have served as a gathering place for the crowds. The date and details come from an older caption card, so they merit checking.
