Two men ride in the back of an open carriage at a New England county or state fair in this 1922 photograph, a detail that sets it apart from the many fairground views on this board. By the early 1920s, agricultural fairs across New England still drew farm families by horse and wagon, even as automobiles were becoming common on rural roads. Carriages like this one carried exhibitors, visitors and their gear around the grounds, so the scene captures a transitional moment when horse-drawn travel and motor traffic shared the same rural landscape.
