A large crowd gathered outside a fair building at a New England county or state fair in 1922, the kind of group portrait that was common at the time. Agricultural fairs in the region had run for generations, with exhibition halls for produce, livestock, canned goods, and domestic handiwork, and by the 1920s growing numbers of visitors were arriving by automobile and interurban rail. Photographs like this one show how these events served as a meeting point for farm families, townspeople, and exhibitors. The staging of so many people in front of one building also gives a sense of the fair as a civic occasion.
