A refreshment stand at the Minnesota State Fair is the focus here, a small vendor's booth where visitors could pause for a snack between the exhibit halls and livestock barns. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington, D.C., photographer known for her documentary work around the turn of the century, is credited with the image. The date of about 1900 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently confirmed. By then the fair, held in St. Paul since 1885, drew large crowds of farm families, and food stands like this one were a familiar part of the grounds.
