The Minnesota State Fair, held in Saint Paul, drew crowds of farm families and city visitors every late summer, and by 1909 it had become one of the most important showcases for the state's agriculture and livestock breeding. Fairs of this era served as a kind of traveling classroom, where new machinery, prize animals and improved crops were displayed side by side with the midway entertainments. The record gives only the title and year, so this picture is best read as a window onto that scene: the fairgrounds and barns where Minnesota's rural life met the growing city.
