The subject here is military equipment of the U.S. Army, recorded on a glass negative that the record dates somewhere between 1912 and 1930. That span covers the years when the Army was shifting from horse-drawn transport toward motor vehicles, a change that was especially visible during and after World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, made many pictures of government subjects in this period, and its glass negatives were often produced quickly for sale. The record notes that streaks and other blemishes from the deteriorating coating may appear on the negative.
