Here the image is an engraving rather than a painting or photograph, and the record credits Thomas Hicks as the painter whose work was translated into print by the engraver H. Wright Smith. Engravings like this were how many Americans in the 1850s first saw likenesses of famous figures, since they could be printed in quantity and hung in parlors, schoolrooms, and public halls. Washington's image carried particular weight in those decades, when the country was divided over slavery and sectional loyalty, and writers and artists often invoked him as a shared symbol of the Union. Its role as patriotic decoration is as much a part of its story as the portrait itself.
