A young clergyman, William Cassiday Cattell, sits with a large open Bible while five page boys stand near him. The accompanying note says he tutored the boys in Albemarle, Virginia, which places the scene in the years between 1848 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading portrait process. Cattell, born in 1827, later became a clergyman, and the picture now belongs to the James McKeen Cattell Papers at the Library of Congress. The photographer is unidentified, but the sixth-plate size and the curved diamond case with its leaf border reflect the common styles of the period.
