Two brothers, William Pinkney Rodgers (1821–1893) and Henry Rodgers (1823–1854), sit for this three-quarter-length quarter-plate daguerreotype, each holding a hat, and their names are inscribed on the front of the case. The portrait dates from between 1840 and 1854, when daguerreotypes were the dominant form of photographic portraiture and sitters posed formally for these small, mirror-bright silver images. Henry died in 1854, so the picture likely dates from late in his short life. The photographer is unidentified, but the case matches known variants in the Rinhart catalog of daguerreotype cases. The image is part of the Rodgers Family Papers at the Library of Congress.
