Rather than a battlefield scene, this photograph shows a Zouave-uniformed crew rehearsing how to lift and carry wounded men off the field, with the posed setup typical of the period's wet collodion glass negatives. Taken in 1862, the year Jonathan Letterman reorganized Union army medical services and the ambulance corps was being drilled and standardized, it records the training that was meant to speed care for casualties. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who worked in the Washington area, made the negative, and its handwritten and stamped numbers show how the Library of Congress catalogued it. The image is useful for seeing how military medicine was taught before the Civil War's most costly battles.
