Wilmerding was a planned company town in Allegheny County, built in the early 1890s around the Westinghouse Air Brake works east of Pittsburgh. The record dates this view to circa August 27, 1897, only a few years after the factory and its workers' housing went up. A shelflist card names T.M. Fowler in connection with the picture, but that attribution is unverified. The scene is worth studying for how an industrial community of that era was laid out along the rail lines that its products served.
