Two governors, listed in the record only as Hay and McGovern, are the particular subject here, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, and that data has not been verified. Bain's staff made pictures like this for newspaper and wire use in the early twentieth century, when quick studio and press portraits of public officials were in steady demand. The glass negative format of 5 by 7 inches or smaller was common for that work, and it is the physical record that survives. Because the date is missing, viewers should treat the names and the occasion as open questions and check them against the collection's catalog notes.
