The name on this glass negative, Jas. Whitney, comes from a caption the Bain News Service wrote on the plate or its card, and the record notes that the title has not been verified, so the subject's identity remains uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that George Grantham Bain started around the turn of the twentieth century to supply newspapers with photographs of current events and public figures. Its glass plates, made with large-format cameras, give a dense record of American life in the early 1900s, and this one shows how editors' captions were attached to images for publication.
