William Jennings Bryan, the Nebraska lawyer and three-time Democratic nominee for president, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service files. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York in the early twentieth century, supplied press photographs to newspapers, and its negatives document a wide range of public figures of the period. Bryan was best known for his "Cross of Gold" speech at the 1896 Democratic convention and later served as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. The record does not give a date, so the picture is best read as one of the many portraits of him that circulated in that era.
