William Jennings Bryan was among the most frequently photographed politicians of his era, and this glass negative records him in a bust portrait. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied images to newspapers, is the source of the title, though that attribution comes from its negatives and caption cards and has not been independently verified. Bryan ran for president three times as a Democrat, served as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, and later became a central figure in the 1925 Scopes trial. Glass plates like this one were a common medium for news photographers of the period, valued for the sharp detail they could capture.
