A portrait bust of Dr. Walter Wyman, who headed the federal Marine Hospital Service and its successor agency, the Public Health Service, survives here as a glass negative. Under Wyman, the service oversaw quarantine, port sanitation, and federal responses to epidemics in the early twentieth century, work that helped shape the country's public health system. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs. The title comes from caption data the service recorded and has not been independently verified.
