Keir Hardie, the Scottish miner's son who became one of Britain's most visible labor politicians, appears here in a bust-length portrait. Hardie founded the Independent Labour Party in 1893 and later led the parliamentary group that grew into the Labour Party, and he was known for his plain working dress, including the cloth cap he wore instead of a top hat. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photography firm whose pictures were often made for newspapers. The record gives no date, so the occasion is unknown, but the portrait shows how a press photographer framed a politician who deliberately rejected conventional dress.
