This 1908 glass negative shows Mrs. Simon Guggenheim, wife of the Colorado senator, in a formal bust-length portrait. The Washington, D.C., studio Harris & Ewing made the image, which entered the collection through the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs to newspapers across the country. Because the title comes from unverified caption data, the sitter's identity rests on the original notes. Portraits like this one, made for society and political circles in the early twentieth century, show how studio photographers shaped the public image of prominent families in the nation's capital.
