This glass negative records Lady Helen Gordon-Lennox, a member of the British Gordon-Lennox family, whose name comes from the caption data the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives. That identification has not been independently verified, so the title should be read with some caution. George Grantham Bain founded his New York agency around 1900 to supply news photographs to newspapers, and its glass plates capture the press demand for images of prominent people in the early twentieth century. Portraits like this one show how such agencies packaged society figures for an audience eager to see them.
