Here the pairing is the point: Eugene N. Foss, governor of Massachusetts, and William J. Gaynor, mayor of New York City, two Democrats holding office in neighboring states in the early 1910s. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, made the glass negative, but the record gives no date or occasion for the meeting. The names come from caption data the agency recorded and have not been independently checked, so the identification is worth confirming before you rely on it. Gaynor had survived an assassination attempt in 1910, which made him a figure of national attention that year.
