The title, "My big powerful boys!", casts Uncle Sam as a proud father to American industry and big business. Winsor McCay, best known for the *Little Nemo* comic strip and the animated film *Gertie the Dinosaur*, made the drawing around the 1920s, a decade when factories, railroads and large corporations expanded quickly and drew both praise and suspicion. The affectionate tone of the title hints at that ambivalence about concentrated economic power. The drawing is in ink and blue pencil over a graphite underdrawing on layered paper, so McCay's preparatory sketching is still visible beneath the finished lines.
