Few home-front appeals of the First World War asked as plainly for everyday labor as this color lithograph, whose slogan "Our boys need sox, knit your bit" turns a household craft into a wartime duty. Printed in New York around 1918 by the American Lithographic Company, the poster belongs to the wave of American war posters that the government and patriotic groups used to recruit civilian volunteers. Knitting socks, sweaters and other woolens for soldiers was a staple of Red Cross and women's organization drives, so the image speaks to the many women and older Americans who did their part at home. Its emphasis on "your bit" shows how the war effort was framed as a shared contribution.
