Its title, "We need you," makes a direct appeal, and its subject is the American Red Cross's need for nurses during the First World War. Albert Sterner, a New York illustrator known for magazine and portrait work before the war, designed the image, and the American Lithographic Company printed this color lithograph in New York in 1918. By that year, the war overseas and the influenza epidemic at home had strained the country's medical services, and recruiting nurses was a central task for the Red Cross. Posters like this one were displayed in public places to encourage women to train and serve.
