Plate 43 of Goya's *Caprichos* shows a man slumped asleep over a table while owls, bats, and a cat-like lynx gather around him. The title, *El sueño de la razón produce monstruos* (the sleep of reason produces monsters), turns the image into a warning against credulity and superstition. Goya first published the set of 80 satirical etchings in 1799, but it was withdrawn from sale within days. This 1868 impression was printed in Madrid by the Calcografía Nacional, which later held the copper plates, so the image reached viewers long after its first run.
