Spring 1939!" is an India ink drawing over graphite underdrawing, dated March 21, 1939, and the catalog notes suggest it was probably published in the Washington Star. The title's exclamation point and seasonal cheer contrast with the news of the moment: a week earlier, on March 15, German forces had occupied what remained of Czechoslovakia, and European diplomacy was moving steadily toward war. Editorial cartoons of this kind compressed current events into a single image, so the drawing is best read as commentary on that week's headlines. The pencil lines beneath the ink also reveal the artist's working process.
