The Capitol's dome and wings emerge out of wet darkness in this 1919 view, the rain blurring the lamplight into soft streaks across the grounds. Photographer Grenbeaux, whose name appears in the record as the maker of this print, worked in the early twentieth century, when the Capitol was a common subject for pictorial photographers hoping to capture the building in changing light and weather. Nighttime views like this one were prized for turning a familiar civic landmark into something moody and atmospheric. Look closely at the reflections and the low glow around the building to see how the exposure balances the bright dome against the surrounding gloom.
